(KMJ) From NFL star to murderer. That’s what the Kern County DA is calling Lawrence Phillips after charging the former first round pick with first degree murder this week.
Phillips, who was already serving more than 30 years for a series of violent crimes, allegedly murdered his cell-mate inside the Kern Valley State Prison earlier this year.
If convicted, the former Rams running back will face a term of 25-to life, plus 15 years.
The Kern County DA’s office told USA Today Phillips would not face death because there were no “special circumstances’’ — such as multiple murders, murdering during a robbery and murder with a prior conviction of murder — that allows a California prosecutor to pursue the death penalty.

He’s due to be arraigned on Sept. 15.
