FRESNO (KMJ) — A back to school supplies run has inspired a valley second grader to help out his fellow students whose families can’t afford to equip them for the new year.
It all started when Zackeria Lovick and his mother were getting all the paper and pens he’d need for the second grade.
“We were shopping for school supplies for him and he realized how expensive things are”, explained his mother Mallorie Silos. “I explained to him that there are children who can’t afford it.
“He got very shocked, very surprised, he didn’t understand, and so he goes ‘so how can we get them supplies’?”
So Zackeria wanted to do something about that, and set about asking people to donate school supplies to the children who need them.
That donation effort is already going strong, with the family’s dining table already full of donated school supplies for children in need.
“Since then we’ve opened his own bank account for it”, continues Mallorie. He’s been going to people’s houses picking up donations. He’s getting really excited about it, it’s very fun to watch”.
Zackeria’s goal is to give backpacks filled with supplies to a different Fresno Unified School each month until next May, and then collect donations again over the summer for a big ‘back to school’ event. The plans is to continue collecting supplies for years to come.
The first drop off takes place Monday at Del Mar Elementary School.
“He decided to do Del Mar, and then I’ve kinda been trying to ask him which is the next school and he’s like ‘I don’t know hold on’!”
“It’s nice for him to see that there are good people out there that want to help him”.
If you want to help the second grader’s efforts, all donations are welcome. You can get donations to the cause by:
