MADERA (KMJ) — The minor alleged to have started the Willow Fire is expected to be let out of juvenile detention into his mother’s custody.

It’s ahead of his court date, set for just over a week’s time. A clinic in Fresno has been selected to then psychologically evaluate the minor.

The Willow Fire scorched almost 6,000 acres of land and cost almost $20 million to extinguish.

Madera County District Attorney’s office says the suspect may need as much as two years of psychological treatment.

“What I believe that he needs is psychological counseling on a weekly or twice a week basis”, says Madera County DA David Linn.

“My ultimate goal was to get the young man psychological counseling so that he can go on an lead a normal live. We’re going to try to save the kid”.

Any psychological treatment ordered by the court would be a part of his sentence, either through probation or through a direct sentence from the judge.

The unnamed minor’s next court date has been set for September 3rd.
