State Bill Targets Using Recycled Fracking Water

A Southern California lawmaker wants consumers to know if their food was grown with fracking water.

State Assembly member Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) introduced a bill that would label food irrigated with oil field recycled water.

He says it’s being done under the banner of water conservation.

But he believes few people are aware of the potential health issues from eating produce irrigated with this recycled water.

Under his proposal, a label that says “produced using recycled or treated oil-field wastewater”, would be required to sale the produce.

Some farmers in Kern County have used the recycled water because of the low cost and a shortage of traditional irrigation water.

The assemblyman says “studies show a high possibility that recycled oil-field wastewater may still contain dangerous chemicals, even after treatment.”
