Former President Jimmy Carter has announced he has been diagnosed with cancer.
90 year old Carter was the nation’s 39th president.
“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body, I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare.” – Jimmy Carter.
Carter’s cancer is widely spread, but it’s not known where it originated.
He announced on August 3rd that he had surgery to remove a small mass from his liver – which is often a place where cancer spreads and less commonly is the primary source of it.
Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said the surgery earlier this month was elective.
Carter has remained active for the center in recent years, making public appearances at its headquarters in Atlanta.
He traveled overseas including a visit to Guyana that was cut short when he developed a bad cold.
Carter’s prognosis is said to be excellent for a full recovery.
