Tulare County Offers Amnesty For Traffic Tickets

TRAFFIC TICKET

Have an unpaid ticket from Tulare County? You’re set to get a break.

Tulare County is giving a discount through a one-time amnesty program for unpaid traffic and non-traffic infraction tickets.

“They put a hold on license as part of their collection activity – so it prevents people from being able to get to work, to make the money because they don’t have the license – it just kind of snowballs, it doesn’t help them pay those fines because they can’t get to work to get the money to pay the fines. so they are able to get their license reinstated.” – Deanna Jasso, Director of Court Administration.

On June 24, 2015, Governor Brown signed into law a one-time amnesty program for unpaid traffic and non-traffic infraction tickets.

The Superior Court of California, County of Tulare, will participate in the state-mandated program commencing October 1, 2015.

The program allows defendants to have the civil assessment deducted and reduce their remaining court ordered debt 50 to 80 percent.

Individuals with unpaid tickets whose fines were originally due to be paid or had a court date on or before January 1, 2013, are eligible to have their debt reduced by 50 or 80 percent, depending on income and may have their license reinstated.

Individuals who are currently making payments for unpaid tickets both before and after January 1, 2013, are eligible to have their driver’s license reinstated but are NOT eligible for a reduction in the amount owed.

Parking tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), and reckless driving cases are NOT eligible for participation.

The program will run from October 1, 2015, through March 31, 2017.

The discount will be 80 percent for those individuals who can certify they make less than 125 percent of the federal poverty level, $14,712 for an individual or $30,312 for a family of four, or receive public assistance.

All other eligible participants will have their debt reduced by 50 percent.
