You find a baby bird — what do you do?

KMJ’S Liz Kern knows…

Liz: Found it outside KMJ’s stairs, the nest unreachable – a sparrow – 1 day old

“And they’re usually not always like this – some of they you find are already grown. – Susan Andrioni from Pet ER.

“If you don’t know of they are injured or not you should have someone look at it to make sure that they are you know – ok – and not traumatized and need to be euthanized – because you don’t want them to you know just die,” says Susan.

I tried to feed it – dry kitten kibble mixed with water (but not too wet) every 45 minutes is recommended by Susan Andrioni, who also says parent birds sleep in the night so she said you have a break off the feeding schedule.

My 12 year old son Aussi and I fed by the corner of it’s mouth with a chopstick, a dropper might have been better according to Susan, who also said the bird can choke if you feed it directly facing the beak versus accessing the side of the mouth.

“It’s not always an easy thing to just do the kibble and a mixture because the different birds need different things.

In the end – after desperate rookie attempts – we gave up…and looked for help – at Pet ER, where we handed off the hatchling.

“Critter Creek, they have a person there that does songbirds.” – Susan Andrioni, Veterinarian Tech, Pet ER.

I called Fresno wildlife – but they actually needs more bird volunteers – if you know how to take care of birds give them a call.

I hope our little friend lives…. Susan Andrioni from Pet ER believes it will.
