FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Leptospirosis has been discovered in Fresno County.
“The bacteria likes to setup in kidneys. Unfortunately, what that can lead to, is kidney failure,” says Dr. Katherine Burts of the Fresno Veterinary Emergency Center.
Burts tells KMJ News it remains somewhat of a mystery. “We never saw “lepto” in Fresno; we would test all sorts of patients, and we would never come up with a positive. In the last 6 months or so, [we’ve seen] 8 to 10.”
The symptoms for which to look: vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.
No human cases have been reported in Fresno County, but the Department of Public Health is advising avoiding all contact with pets’ urine.
