The High Cost of Dying

It’s not something you want to think about – dying – but being put to rest can cost more than being born.

Family Services Counselor Harriet Thibeaux deals with death daily – her concern is that its a cost most families are not prepared to encounter.

Thibeaux says for a funeral and services expect to spend 10,000 dollars upwards of 19,000 dollars, and the industry is doubling costs every 7 to 10 years.

The casket, the cemetery, the church, even catering are all costs that have to accounted for and are often a surprise to the families in a time when they are grieving, and many families have not saved up to pay for expenses.

“Its easy for these expenses to go up, so when they wind up having to lay mom to rest, and then three months later, four months later, they have to lay Dad to rest – how much is that $28,000?” Harriet Thibeaux, Family Services Counselor

Thibeaux’s advice is to have a candid conversation with your loved ones now, while you have time to plan.

She says you can lock in costs and make payments and decide family arrangements before the unexpected occurs.
