FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Voter turnout fell to a record low in 2014, with fewer than 42 percent of California voters casting a ballot in November.
According to a newly-released analysis by the UC Davis Center for Regional Change, the dismal rate among the state’s fastest-growing ethic groups was a significant reason.
Fewer than 28 percent of Latinos, and just over 36 percent of Asian Americans took part in the election.
Analysts attribute the record-low turnout to a lack of competition, although that’s expected to change in 2016.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers have introduced several proposals in an effort to reverse the trend, including, sending every California voter a ballot by mail.
