Drovers Cattle Network reports several livestock groups are calling for a stockpile of foot and mouth disease vaccines in case of an outbreak.
The request comes after USDA recently announced the OK for beef imports from parts of Brazil and Argentina known for FMD.
Those groups include the National Cattleman’s Beef Association, National Milk Producers Federation and the National Pork Producers Council.
The groups say if FMD were to break out in the U.S., vaccination will play a key role in strategies for controlling the disease and limiting financial losses.
There are concerns that the current vaccine supply would not be adequate enough if an outbreak were to occur.
More funding for the vaccine program administered by USDA is also being requested.
