FRESNO (KMJ) — Good news for Fresno’s water conservation efforts as the city’s usage has dropped by 30% this month compared to the same time two years ago.
It’s 5% more than Governor Brown’s own target, which asks everyone in the state to cut back by 25% to account for the ongoing drought.
The City of Fresno has cut back by 30% for the month of June 2015, compared to the same month two years previously. It’s been put down to a renewed push on water conservation – and the introduction of an updated watering schedule.
“We’re on the right track but we can’t rest on our laurels,” said Thomas Esqueda, Director of Public Utilities for the City of Fresno.
“We’re urging everyone to focus on conservation during the hot summer months where we can make the biggest reductions. If we start falling behind in our projections, it’ll be hard to catch up in November when water use drops.”
It was almost a year ago when the city decided to go to Stage 2 water restrictions. That was followed by the City Council recently passing an updated Water Conservation Act, which changed the spring/summer watering schedule to start two months later on May 1st, and changed the watering times to run between 6pm and 9am.
“For those folks who are still out there, and believe me there are thousands of water customers in Fresno that are watering every day of the week, we’re just asking those folks to learn to count to two”, says the City of Fresno’s Mark Standriff.
“If we can do that then we can stop the folks that are watering on Mondays,Thursdays, and Fridays, we are going to be in great shape”.
The current city watering schedule can be found below.
