Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Williamson described the loss of Officer David Nelson this way:
“He may have been old enough to be my son, but he was a brother to me.”
Williamson shared those thoughts with the media on Monday.
The 26-year-old police officer was fatally injured in a crash during a high-speed pursuit last Friday morning.
Chief Williamson thanked the public for the outpouring of support his department has received. And he also thanked his fellow members of law enforcement for their calls and words of encouragement.
Officer David Nelson’s viewing and funeral will be held later this week in the Los Angeles area. And a memorial service for him will be held in Bakersfield at the Rabobank Theatre on July 7th.
Meantime the suspect Nelson was chasing, 32 year old Julian Hernandez, was arrested over the weekend. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Kern County Superior Court.
