FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The number of Californians who classify as obese, has risen to its highest point .

The UCLA Health Policy Research Center reports nearly 18 million adults and adolescents are considered overweight or obese.

24.8% of adults fall into that category, although it varies greatly by county.

Imperial, Tehama, Tulare, and Kings counties have the state’s highest obesity rates, ranging from 36% to 41%.

Fresno is somewhat better at 30%, although that’s significantly higher than rates in the Bay Area.

The study comes amid a push for healthier diets and exercise, including making communities more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrians.
