FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — About 1.5 million undocumented Californians lack access to medical services, according to the Heath Access Foundation.
However, the problem is more prominent in certain counties.
Supervisor Henry Perea says Fresno is one of 11 counties, which does provide care to the indigent and undocumented.
“That part of our population — that works in our agriculture, building industries and hospitality industry, that provides needed services that are required in this country — when they get sick, they can expect to be receiving adequate health care to meet their needs,” Perea tells KMJ News.
Undocumented immigrants are prohibited from enrolling in the state health exchange; although, lawmakers are seeking to create a separate program, which would provide coverage for children, as well as some adults.
