FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Gas prices have risen by 52 cents over the past month here in Fresno; they’re now averaging $3.61 a gallon.

Statewide, they’ve increased more than double the national rate, in just a few weeks.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, supply disruptions in the rather isolated California gas market are responsible. A fire at the ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance earlier this year is said to have played a major role.

California’s special blend of fuel is also to blame for some of the highest prices in the nation; but, state lawmakers allege that oil companies are gouging consumers, and they’ve sent them letters, demanding answers.

Analysts say inventories have stabilized, but when prices will actually reflect that is anyone’s guess.
