Four Sunnyside High Students Selected As Dell Scholars

DELL SCHOLAR

Four students from Sunnyside High School’s Doctors Academy AVID class have been selected as Dell Scholars, bringing the total number of Dell Scholars from Sunnyside to 41, the most of any high school in the country.

The programs recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations with a greater emphasis on grit, ambition and potential than academic records and test scores.

An initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the program provides students with resources and mentoring support to earn their Bachelor’s degree.

“Having a belief that hard work and support can get students to meet their goals that’s a school wide culture that we have here.” – Amanda Peterson, Avid Coordinator, Sunnyside High.

This year’s recipients from Sunnyside are Jessica Elorza, who will attend UC Merced; Augustine Mijangos, who will attend UC Davis; Jayline Pacheco, who will attend the University of Oregon; and Carlos Villalobos, who will attend UC Berkeley.

Students receive $20,000, a laptop and textbook credits.
