FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Even with a larger population, total water use has declined significantly in the nation over the past 4 decades.

The U.S. Geological Survey says between 2005 and 2010, per capita water use dropped 17%, to 1,200 gallons per person a day; that’s a level which hasn’t been seen since the 1940s.

Conservation was seen in every sector, including industrial, municipal, and agriculture. But, researchers say the efforts aren’t enough, especially here in the Golden State, where we’re battling a prolonged drought.

The governor has called for 20% and 25% reductions in water use, following some of the driest months on record.
