FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A changing climate has the potential to make this drought the worst since the Dark Ages.
Experts have come to that conclusion, using empirical drought reconstruction and soil moisture metrics from general circulation models, which they say point to a significantly drier later half of the 21st century.
They attribute the shift to growing populations in Arizona, Nevada, and here in California.
Their findings, published in Science Advances, also show that water sources will likely remain static, or decline.
The Golden State has been hit hardest by the drought, with the agriculture industry taking much of the impact.
