Fresno PD: Crime Up Since Prop 47 Passed

FRESNO (KMJ) — Auto theft – vehicle break ins – and felony arrests. all three are up in Fresno and Chief Dyer says it's down to Proposition 47.

He says rise in crime in Fresno is directly linked to the passing of Proposition 47 or – as it was also known  – The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act.

"But as you look at our crime information – you can tell that we do not have safer neighborhoods or safer schools".

He says the re-classification of certain crimes from felonies to misdemeanors means those caught for possessing drugs aren't getting the treatment they need to break the habit.

"In fact the voters in Fresno County voted Proposition 47 down. But California voters in general voted for Proposition 47. Now we're left to deal with it".

Fresno Police say they're trying to find alternatives for the people they arrest – all while working within the new confines of Prop 47.
