LOS OSOS, Calif. (AP) – A surfer bitten by a juvenile great white shark along the central California coast is recovering from his injuries and has been released from the hospital.

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center spokesman Ron Yukelson says the man was released Monday. He could not release any further information, citing privacy regulations.

The San Luis Obispo-area man was attacked Sunday. A witness said the man was dragged completely underwater by the shark.

The man surfaced a few seconds later and paddled back to shore, using his surfboard leash as a tourniquet. A doctor who happened to be walking along the beach came to his aid.

Sharks are native to the area but attacks on humans are rare.
