(KMJ) – The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office is now mourning the loss of one of its Canine Deputies.

The following statement was put out on behalf of Sheriff Mike Boudreaux:

Wednesday evening, October 16th, K9 Deputy “Rocco” was hit and killed by a car on Avenue 328 in Visalia, after his handler stopped to let him have a bathroom break and “Rocco” took off running after a rabbit.
The rabbit ran into the roadway and “Rocco” followed him. Within seconds, he was struck by a car.
K9 Deputy “Rocco” was a one-year-old Belgian Malinois. He has served by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office since May of this year.
Please join Sheriff Boudreaux in honoring “Rocco’s” legacy and keeping his handler and his family in your prayers. He will be deeply missed.
