Cause of Death Released in Taco Eating Death

FRESNO (KMJ) – A cause of death has been released in the case of a Fresno man who died after a competitive eating event.

Tuesday night, it was in the middle of the third inning of the Fresno Grizzlies’ game.

41-year old Dana Hutchings collapsed while taking part in a taco eating contest at Chukchansi Park.

Rescuers tried saving Hutchings with the Heimlich maneuver and CPR, he was taken to CRMC, where he died.

The Fresno County coroner took the case.

“What our forensic pathologist found was that he died as a result of choking,” Botti said.

Sheriff-coroner spokesman Tony Botti says Hutchings death was unusual.

“I can’t recall something like this happening, just a tragic set of circumstances,” Botti said.
