Justice Department: Use of Deadly Force Down in Calif.

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Law enforcement agencies in the Golden State have reported 628 cases for last year of deadly force or serious bodily injury.

New figures from California Department of Justice show a decline of 20 percent, in just 2 years.

The drop comes as the Democratic legislative majority has sought to increasingly restrict the use of deadly force.

A controversial bill being considered would allow police to kill, only if there is no reasonable alternative.

Critics, such as Clovis Police Chief Matt Basgall, say “It would make the officers really second-guess everything they do. It already is hard to be a police officer; they’re under scrutiny all the time for every decision they make.”

The legislation needs to clear the Senate floor, before it can head to the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom.
