Get Ready to Pay More for Gas in California

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Just as gas prices have begun a slight decline, fuel taxes in the Golden State are about to rise.

Starting July 1, the figure will rise by 5.6 cents a gallon, to 47.3 cents.

It’s part of the 10-year tax and fee increase, approved back in 2017 by the California State Legislature, who claims it’ll generate around $52 billion for transportation improvements.

Prior to that, drivers were paying around 28 cents in taxes per gallon of gas.

Last year, then-Governor Jerry Brown sought a 4 cents per gallon tax increase, but it was rejected, by the Board of Equalization.

Now, that authority belongs to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, who established the 5.6 cent increase, that’ll go into effect on the 1st of July.
