Bill Calling for Tire Change Fee Increase in Calif. Withdrawn

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Legislation calling for an increase in California’s tire change fee has been scrapped.

Democratic Assemblyman Chris Holden has asked that his bill be tabled, following claims that raising the fee from $1.75 to $3.25, would hit lower-income Californians the hardest.

The increase would have generated an estimated $55 million a year, which would have been used to bolster California’s Stormwater Permit Compliance Fund.

The measure was opposed by the California Tire Dealers Association, who argued that contrary to claims otherwise, tires contain minimal amounts of zinc, which has been identified as a threat to the collection of stormwater.
