Family of Man Fatally Shot by Fresno Police Awarded $4.75M

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A federal jury has awarded the family of 45-year-old Casimero “Shane” Casillas $4.75 million, after he was shot by Fresno police in September 2015.

Civil rights attorney Bill Schmidt tells KMJ News:

Casillas was shot three times, after an officer said he feared for his life, because Casillas was about to attack him with a metal pipe.

Schmidt believes the verdict strengthens the case for new policing policies being proposed in Sacramento.
