Sergeant Injured After Overnight Standoff With Armed Suspect

MADERA (KMJ) — One man has been taken into custody following an officer involved shooting in Madera County. One sergeant was injured in the overnight standoff, which was initially reported as a domestic disturbance involving a firearm.

Dispatch was called around 9pm Sunday, sending Madera County Sheriff’s Office to a home on the 28000 block of Avenue 15¾.

“Upon arrival at the scene, a Madera County Sheriff’s sergeant was shot in the leg by the subject. He was treated at the scene and transported by EMS to a local regional valley hospital,” detailed the office’s Kayla Serratto.

“He has since been treated for a gunshot wound and has been released from the hospital.”

Serratto said that the suspect remained inside the home for several more hours, until the Madera County regional SWAT team forced its way in around 2am and took him into custody.

The suspect was later identified as 39 year old Madera resident Luis Alberto Maravilla. He has been booked on multiple felony charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer. The injured deputy has been identified as Sergeant Mike Pace.
