YUBA CITY (KMJ) — A family who moved from Porterville to Paradise to be close to sick relatives is now figuring out what to do next after their home was destroyed by the Camp Fire.

The blaze in Butte County was first reported Thursday morning and has claimed at least five lives, as well as destroying thousands of structures.

“It’s a little unreal,” explained Stephanie Guillen. “It’s hard to think about with four kids having to start over, but I have had so much support.”

Stephanie said she had approximately 30 minutes between first seeing the approaching flames and being told to evacuate.

“It was like a scene out of a movie. The cops were going up and down the road on their loudspeakers telling everybody to get out, it was pitch black, huge things of ash were falling from the sky. It was scary.”

The family are now staying in a hotel in Yuba City. A GoFundMe has been set up to help them (click here).
