FRESNO CA (KMJ) – What do you do if you’re in a location when gunfire rings out?

The shooting in Thousand Oaks could happen anywhere said Fresno County’s Sheriff Margaret Mims.

Speaking on KMJ’s Ray Appleton Show on Thursday, Sheriff Mims said you have just seconds to survive – whether it’s a gunman, domestic violence or a terror attack.

“Most of the time it’s over by the time we can get there,” said Sheriff Mims. “What can people do to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim in active shooter situations?”

Fresno County’s Sheriff answered the question she posed, saying they teach a program that’s offered to County workers called Seconds to Survive.

“The whole basis for what we teach is run, hide, fight. Run if you can — hide if you can — fight — if you must.

If you have to fight look around to see what you might be able to use to protect other people,” said Sheriff Mims.

More advice from the Sheriff is to see who’s in the room.

“The people around you – do they make you comfortable? Do they make you uncomfortable?” asks Sheriff Mims.

Whether you are going to a movie theater, a restaurant or the grocery store, Sheriff Mims says situational awareness has to become second nature.

“Pretty soon it kind of comes naturally of Where are the exits, and Where are you sitting, and Can you get out?‘ I just think that people need to think about that,” said Sheriff Mims.
