Commercial Shops Hoping To Sell Recreational Pot Dealt Blow By Fresno Council

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) -Commercial and retail shops hoping to sell recreational marijuana will not be allowed in Fresno.

After City Council’s 4-3 vote Thursday, the amendment will be back in council for a second reading and final approval mid September.

Council President Clint Olivier and Council Members Esmeralda Soria and Oliver Baines were the “no” votes.

“I have made a motion to continue this item until we receive the evaluation from the consultant that the Mayor, the Mayor’s Office is organizing.” – Council Member Oliver Baines.

Mayor Lee Brand had questions about crime and gangs and the effect on the city if recreational marijuana was allowed.

The Mayor proposed getting a quote on the cost of hiring a marijuana consultant and coming back in 60 days, but Council Member Gary Bredefeld questioned the move and the finances, “not sure where money comes from – the general fund?”

“I think it’s complex enough that I do believe we should get a consultant, and I think that we can do it based on our RFQ (request for quote), and probably under $50,000.” – Mayor Lee Brand.

The motion for a consultant passed on a vote 4 to 2, with a city council subcommittee to be formed to work on bring someone with experience to help the City of Fresno navigate policy.

This is just one item pertaining to marijuana — another ordinance to limit the number of personal use pot plants is the subject of heated debate in the City of Fresno.
