CHP: Calif. Losing Millions Due to Car Registration Evaders

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The State of California claims it’s losing millions of dollars every year, due to drivers who are failing to re-register out-of-state vehicles.

The law allows residents to drive such cars in the state for 20 days, before they need to be transferred.

However, the CHP says buyers of high-dollar luxury cars are putting the process off for as long as possible, to avoid the expensive fees, which can be in the thousands, depending on the value.

The agency is now asking residents to report out-of-state plates via a website.
