Link Between Legalization of Gay Marriage & Decline in Teen Suicides?

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The percentage of American teenagers who attempted suicide has declined, following the legalization of same-sex marriages by the U.S. Supreme Court.

According to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suicide attempts among straight teens had been estimated to be around 6 percent, between 1999 and 2015.

But, among those who identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, the number was around 29 percent.

Following the court’s 2015 decision, that rate had dropped by 14 percent.

However, researchers say more data needs to be collected, to confirm a direct correlation.
