Students in the Valley will be learning “strategically important” languages this summer, through the “Star Talk” program – that starts in June.

First students learn their name in Chinese in the immersion language program called StarTalk started by the federal government as part of Homeland Security’s initiative to teach important strategic languages such as Russian, Arabic, and Korean to keep up with the global economy and as development of national safety.

Startalk is at 96 sites across the nation, with Fresno’s program is entering its sixth year.

Last year, 72 students took part writing, speaking Chinese, even learning Kung Fu, many earning college credits for their work.

“In the morning, they will learn the language – reading, writing – we have a Chinese lunch, and after that more cultural awareness activities, and also the 30th we go to San Francisco.” – Elaine Yen, StarTalk Coordinator, Hoover High School.

Yen is accepting applications for the June 13th session at Hoover High School.

Class meets daily from 8:00- 2:30.

If your child is in 5th through 12th grade, they can apply – deadline is May 20th.
