Fresno Urban Zoning Now Allowing Tiny Houses

TINY HOUSE SORIA

January 14, 2016, FRESNO (KMJ) – Fresno’s in on the move to go small – not big in housing.

Council Member Esmeralda Soria and Mayor Ashley Swearengin welcomed California Tiny House, Thursday, on display at City Hall.

Fresno is gaining national attention for this change in the development code, making our city one of the few in the country with this urban zoning option for tiny houses.

Many are choosing to downsize their living space – in the tiny house movement.

The typical American home is around 2,600 square feet – small or tiny houses are between 100 and 400 square feet.

Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, enabling simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space.

People choose Tiny Homes over environmental and financial concerns – most Americans spend 1/3 to 1/2 of their income for the roof over their heads; this translates to 15+ years of working over a lifetime just to pay for it.

The desire for less to clean and more time and freedom plays a factor, too.

The Fresno building company called “California Tiny Homes” is getting interest from around the world.

Nick Mosley and his brother and father are handcrafting these houses under 400 square feet.

Nick has even received three offers to host his own tiny house show from one of the big cable networks.

Since Council Member Esmeralda Soria and the Mayor worked to change the urban zoning code, Fresno is now getting national attention for allowing the homes on residential property.

The tiny house is on display at City Hall before it heads to Santa Cruz.
